A Barnsley street was cordoned off and the army called to the scene after ‘suspicious items’ were found

A man has been arrested following a large-scale police operation in Grimethorpe, Barnsley, after South Yorkshire Police raided a house at 7.10am today where a number of “suspicious items” were found.

Police operation continues in Barnsley

A man has been arrested following a large-scale police operation which saw a huge cordon installed on a residential street today.

Several “suspicious objects” have been found in Grimethorpe, a village east of Barnsley, South Yorkshire, causing alarm among residents. A 100-meter cordon was erected as police and the army handled the discovery.

Now a 58-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of offenses under the Firearms Act and remains in custody, South Yorkshire Police have confirmed.

The 100m barrier caused panic among residents of Grimethorpe, a village east of Barnsley, South Yorkshire. One woman, who lives on the road near Barnsley, South Yorkshire, said: “It’s crazy that something like this is happening on our street.”

Another resident, a mother who lives in the street, said: “When I took my daughter to school this morning it was just one house closed, now it’s almost the whole street. It’s scary, obviously it must be something serious. all the emergency services here.”

A man, who lives nearby, said: “It is worrying and even shocking. It made me feel quite anxious.” Police advised citizens to avoid the area.

A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “At around 7.10am today (Wednesday 8 May), police executing a warrant on Brierley Road, Grimethorpe found a number of suspicious items.

“The Army’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team has been called in and a 100m cordon is in place as a precaution while emergency services work together at the scene.

“There are some road closures and public transport may also be disrupted. We advise members of the public to avoid the area. We would like to thank the public for their patience and co-operation. We will update you again as soon as we have more information.”

The police operation appears to be focused on one house in particular, Yorkshire Live reports. There is a working men’s club and sports pitch down the road, as well as a nursery and supermarket nearby. Brierley C of E School, also nearby, was not evacuated, contrary to local concerns.
