British rapper Stormzy joined the celebrations as AFC Croydon Athletic, who he owns, won promotion to the eighth tier of English football.

Stormzy is part of a three-man consortium that bought the Rams last summer, along with former Crystal Palace star Wilfried Zaha. He grew up in the South Norwood district of Croydon before becoming a superstar rapper.

It has been a successful first season in charge for the new owners, with promotion to the Isthmian League secured on Tuesday night. Croydon have clinched the final play-off spot in the Combined Counties Premier Division South this season.

They finished 38 points behind champions Farnham Town but will join them in promotion. Croydon beat second-placed Jersey Bulls 2-0 in the play-off semi-final on Saturday to set up a final against Knaphill.

The Rams traveled to Redding Way on Tuesday night for the showcase event. Stormzy called on his social media followers to head to Knaphill’s ground to watch the game and support his team.

He wrote: “The boys have reached the play-off final and need your support tonight! Come out in force and bring your energy to cheer on the Rams in our biggest game yet. Hope to see everyone there tonight, UP THE RAMS! “

With Stormzy also in attendance, Croydon ensured it was a night to remember for everyone associated with the club. They took the lead just before the break when Brandon Pierrick brought down Cian McCarthy’s cross, fought off two challenges and fired over.

The visitors doubled their lead two minutes into the second half with Pierrick providing. The striker ran down the wing before laying it off to Louie Theophanous, who took a touch before sliding the ball home.
