In 2021, Steven Gerrard was asked about one day replacing Jurgen Klopp in the Liverpool hot seat, but made it clear that no Reds fan wanted to consider the day finally upon us.

Steven Gerrard made it abundantly clear how much Jurgen Klopp means to Liverpool when asked to imagine life without him in 2021 – and he spoke for every Reds fan.

Gerrard was Rangers manager when he sat down for an interview with ITV. The former Reds captain was asked about the prospect of one day replacing Klopp in the Liverpool hot seat, but quickly shut down the question, explaining that no supporter wants to consider a time when the German is no longer at lead.

The question began: “There are a lot of Liverpool fans watching your success…” Gerrard cut him off, replying: “Liverpool fans don’t want me to be the manager of Liverpool Football Club. They want Jurgen Klopp to stay. Liverpool manager – and I’m totally with them all.

“We shouldn’t talk about it, we have one of the best managers running our club at the moment, I love him. I hope he stays for a few more years. But I have a job here. I don’t think it’s useful to talk about it and I hope Jurgen stays at Liverpool for many years.”

Liverpool fans responded positively to Gerrard’s comment, with one tweeting: “Couldn’t have said it better”, while another added: “Absolutely adore Gerrard’s words in his interview with ITV. My legend”.

Of course, Klopp’s final day as Reds manager is finally upon us, with the German taking charge of his final Liverpool game at home to Wolves – and Gerrard was right, with fans understandably gutted that the 56-year-old is leaving.

Feyenoord manager Arne Slot is set to replace Klopp at Liverpool after the two clubs agreed a compensation package. The Dutchman confirmed the move to the media in Friday’s press conference.

Meanwhile, Klopp gave his successor the nod of approval in his own press conference. He said: “We’ve got a good squad, a really good manager coming in – and we’ve got all these guys too.
