Work is moving ahead to have the Lilydale Line level crossing free by 2024, a year ahead of schedule.

Work is ramping up to remove the busy level crossing and roundabout by raising the railway line, building a new Croydon station and transport hub.

Following major work over the winter, Croydon will be free by early July 2024 – a year ahead of schedule, with cars running along the new Kent Avenue to Lacey Street link.

The new Croydon station will open to passengers at the end of July 2024, with finishing work on the new station and transport hub continuing into the spring. The new station will have two entrances and courtyards, improved security and modern facilities.

What happens

The team will work 24/7 in Croydon from Friday 24 May until early July along the railway line and adjacent streets while trains are not running.

During this time the works will include:

  • decommissioning and removing the old railway infrastructure
  • installation of new infrastructure and completion of the construction of the new elevated railway bridge
  • complete drainage works and road markings
  • build the new road links to link Kent Avenue to Lacey Street and Devon Street to Wicklow Avenue.
  • There will be changes to pedestrian access around Croydon. The team will provide more information in advance on how users can safely cross the railway line. Traffic management staff will be available throughout the works to ensure the safety of road users and pedestrians.
  • There will be moderate construction noise from machinery. There will also be an increase in workers, vehicles and construction equipment.
  • Construction vehicles will access the rail corridor via Coolstore Road, Railway Crescent, the Devon Street site complex, Gallipoli Parade, Wicklow Avenue and the Lincoln Road service road.
  • During night work, directional lighting will be used for work areas with measures to prevent light leakage.

The site complex and storage area between Mount View Street and Devon Street will be used day and night throughout this period.

Buses will replace trains on sections of the Belgrave and Lilydale lines between Blackburn and Belgrave or Lilydale stations from 8.30pm Friday 24 May until early July.
