Family of student stabbed to death in Amsterdam speak of ‘immeasurable’ loss.

The heartbroken family of a British student who was stabbed to death in Amsterdam have told of their “immeasurable” grief after his killer was jailed. Danny Castledine, 22, was stabbed 44 times when he stopped off in the Dutch capital with a friend on his way to a music festival in Belgium.

The two decided to stop for a day in Amsterdam when Danny was randomly attacked by a man on the street, who then threw his body down the steps. Danny’s killer – a Belgian national called Nongo B – was jailed for 14 years after being convicted of manslaughter by a Dutch court.

His family have now spoken in depth about the tragedy almost two years ago and said the “immeasurable” pain of his loss has only intensified. Mum Alison, from Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, said: “What people don’t realize is that our lives are gone too – we have nothing left.

“Knowing that your child died like that is something you can never erase from your mind. I saw Danny in his casket after he came home, and that picture will stay with me forever.

“I saw every wound on his body, on his face, on his neck, on his hands, where he tried to fight for freedom. That will never leave me – I just think about what his last minutes were like.

“The impact is immeasurable and you just can’t put into words what it’s like. Your happiest moments turn into your worst. You dread birthdays, Christmas, holidays because they’re too painful, and the longer it goes on, the harder it gets because you realize you’ll never see him again.

“Did he know he was going to die? Was he suffering? how long did it take All those things torture you forever, knowing that there is nothing you can do to save your child.”

Keen traveler Danny had just returned from a Caribbean cruise with his family in the days leading up to his death on June 1, 2022. But within 48 hours of leaving, the family’s home was visited by police, who told them that Danny he had been killed.
