Inside Liverpool’s derelict Irish center, empty for decades

The Wellington Rooms is best known as Liverpool’s former Irish Centre, but has fallen into disrepair since it closed in 1997.

The Grade II* neoclassical building on Mount Pleasant was built in the early 1800s and used for high society balls and parties. It then housed the Liverpool Irish Center from 1965 to 1997, acting as a focal point for the city’s significant Irish community.

However, it has since been closed and has cut an increasingly dilapidated figure in the intervening years, showing many signs of urban decay.

It featured in the ECHO’s Stop The Rot campaign, which aimed to preserve Merseyside’s rich architectural heritage. There have also been a number of false dawns for the building’s revival in the years since the Irish Center moved.

Plans were approved for it to become a feature suite in 2002, but this did not materialise. Planning applications for it to become a hotel were subsequently submitted in 2006 and 2007. However, both proposals were rejected due to the impact of a three-storey extension.

In 2017, it was reported that the University of Liverpool and Liverpool John Moores University had teamed up with the Merseyside Building Preservation Trust and Liverpool City Council in a bid to develop a business and innovation hub. This partnership led to emergency works being carried out on the building in 2018, with a consultation on its future use, but no progress has been made on a full refurbishment.

However, there is now new hope for the building’s reopening. Earlier this week, a spokesman for Liverpool City Council told the ECHO that the local authority was in the process of appointing a consultant to carry out a condition survey of the building. This is part of the wider work the council undertakes on its heritage assets.

It is hoped that the condition survey could lead to work being undertaken to restore the Wellington Rooms to their former glory.

When emergency repairs were carried out in 2018, journalists were given a look inside the aging structure, which still bears many of its old fittings, including Guinness taps and Harp lager on the bars. Its grand ballrooms and stage areas still stand, but remain in poor condition after decades of neglect.

Here, we present the images captured in 2018.
