Premier League footballer arrested on suspicion of rape

An unnamed Premier League footballer has been arrested on suspicion of rape.

A 29-year-old man was arrested in the early hours of Monday morning following a complaint about an incident in June this year.

The player was arrested at an address in Barnet, north London, and police are continuing their inquiries into the alleged attack.

A statement from the Met Police said: “On July 4, an allegation of rape of a woman in her 20s was reported to police. The alleged rape was reported to have taken place in June 2022.

“On July 4, a 29-year-old man was arrested at an address in Barnet on suspicion of rape and taken into custody at his location. Inquiries into the circumstances are ongoing.”

The player, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is described as a full international.

His club are understood to be aware the player has been questioned but declined to comment when contacted by the Telegraph.

There is uncertainty over whether he will be available to take part in his club’s pre-season program ahead of the new season which starts in August.
